Soprano Charlene Pauls has appeared on the concert stage with major orchestras across the country as well as on the international stage in Germany, England, France and Spain. Her performances, "like finely cut jewels", have garnered enthusiastic reviews of engagements with conductors such as Robert Shaw, Bramwell Tovey, Frieder Bernius, and Helmuth Rilling. Sought after for her interpretation of the major oratorio works, Ms Pauls is particularly experienced performing Bach (B Minor Mass, St. John Passion, St. Matthew Passion, Christmas Oratorio), Handel (Messiah, Joshua, Saul, Laudate Pueri), Haydn (Creation, Nelson Mass) and Brahms (German Requiem). An enthusiastic proponent of contemporary music, Charlene's performances and numerous CBC broadcasts include Taverner's To a Child Dancing in the Wind, and Jeffrey Ryan's chamber opera The Laurels. Her prize-winning performance of Jocelyn Morlock's Lacrymosa at the International Rostrum of Composers competition has been heard on major classical broadcasters around the world. The Wanderer Within is Charlene's most recent recording. A collaborative effort with Laura Pudwell, Colin Balzer, Tony Funk and Betty Suderman, it features Brahms' Zigeunerlieder. Other discography includes Canciones, a collection of Spanish songs for soprano and guitar, including premier recordings of Leo Brouwer and Sid Robinovitch, with guitarist Ian Hodges. Vancouver-born Ms. Pauls currently teaches voice at Tyndale University in Toronto and has begun studies in the doctoral program at the University of Toronto in vocal performance where she is working with Mary Morrison. |
